Frederick National Lab for Cancer Research Traineeship Opportunities

Summer Research Projects at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research

Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) and Georgetown University (GU) have partnered to provide an outstanding research experience for students demonstrating academic excellence who wish to learn at one of the premiere national laboratories in the nation.  FNLCR is the only national exclusively devoted to biomedical research. Summer traineeship opportunities exist in fields like Tumor Biology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Data Analytics/Data Science, Computer Science, Math/Stats, Pharmacology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Clinical & Translational Research, Health Informatics & Data Science, Health Physics. These traineeships will take place over Summer 2024 and may be virtual or in-person, depending on the needs of the individual lab and the public health situation at that time.  Traineeship dates are flexible (between mid-May and mid-August) based on the student’s availability and the needs of the mentor. Traineeships usually last 8-10 weeks.

These opportunities are open to undergraduate rising seniors, master’s and PhD students (unless otherwise noted). The traineeship is open to students demonstrating academic excellence. Funding, based on merit and acceptance to an opportunity at FNLCR may be available through Georgetown University for stipends. The amount of funding awarded to each individual is dependent upon the duration of the traineeship and the number of traineeships awarded. The amount of funding provided is not contingent upon an individual’s personal financial situation or potential assistance from family. More information on stipends will be provided during the application and selection period.

Application Information:

Who is eligible?

  • If you are a student at Georgetown University and are matriculated over the summer of 2024, you are eligible to apply for a FNLCR traineeship.  Thus, if you are in a 10-month program that began in the fall and you will graduate in May, you will not be able to participate.
  • International students are eligible to participate with some exceptions. If you are an international student here on a student visa, please contact the Office of International Services as soon as possible so that they can help you determine your eligibility.
  • If you reside in the United States, you are eligible to participate in a virtual internship.

Please note that there may not be an open opportunity for every student interested and qualified.

We will begin accepting applications for Summer 2024 on January 18, 2024 with final applications due by January 31, 2024. Applications will be made through the FNLCR portal. The link to that portal is: FNLCR Application Portal

Please see the information session and/or slides for specific instructions on accessing the portal and completing your application.  You will also be asked to provide a CV and the name of a faculty advisor who can provide a letter of recommendation.  Letters of recommendation are due no later than February 9th so you are encouraged to apply early in order to give faculty advisors enough time to meet that deadline.

Any questions regarding the portal can be directed to:  fnlsummertraining@nih.gov

What happens then?

Applications will be reviewed and traineeship meet and greets be scheduled throughout February. Students will be notified of project matches by March 4th.  From March through May, successful students will go through the administrative badging and clearance process at the lab and will sign up in the GU financial system to receive stipend payments.
